Bottling memories: benefits of recording your child’s key moments

“I blinked my eyes

and in an instant,

decades had passed.”

John Mark Green, Taste the Wild Wonder: Poems

Sometimes parenting can feel that way ― one minute you have a tiny squirming bundle in a blanket that won’t let you put them down, the next you’re waving goodbye as they head off to university with a big box of mismatched kitchenware.

You can be left wondering where all that time went and how it can possibly have disappeared so quickly.

Bottling memories with technology

Another of my favourite quotes is from Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier:

“If only there could be an invention that bottled up a memory, like scent. And it never faded, and it never got stale. And then, when one wanted it, the bottle could be uncorked, and it would be like living the moment all over again.”

How wonderful would that be?

While technology may sadly not have reached the memory-smell-bottling stage yet, there are lots of ways it can help us capture and record precious moments in a tangible way.

With a wealth of smartphones, cameras, and apps to help us take photos and videos at any given moment, we constantly have the capability at our fingertips.

Having photos to look back on can be comforting for parents who want to reminisce but there are other benefits too.

  • It can help you bond with your children at any age — showing them photos from when they were younger is a lovely way to share and relive memories.
  • Showing little ones pictures of themselves can assist in their development. Around the age of two, most toddlers can recognise their own image in mirrors and photographs.

At this age, they have started to understand that they are individuals, separate from their parents. Looking at photos of themselves and others helps them make this distinction.

  • They can be shared with friends and family. Particularly pertinent right now, when seeing loved ones is more challenging, taking photos of your child’s key moments can keep grandparents and other family members up to date with their progress.
  • Some parents find it helpful to record their babies’ milestones — either written or with photos — so they can see how their child’s development is going. Of course, every child is different and will reach milestones at different stages, but being able to compare this to their siblings’ or other children’s progress can offer some guidance.

Buried Treasure

But where do the images and video clips we capture go?

Getting physical copies of photographs is becoming more of a rarity.

Often pictures stay on our phones or computers, relegated to untitled folders. Or they wind up on social media where they become buried in news feeds filled with everyone else’s photos.

Traditional baby memory books also seem to be less common now, but there are lots of pregnancy and baby milestone cards available on the market. Held or placed beside your bump or baby in a photograph, these are handy for organising your images because you can clearly see how far along you were or how old your baby was at the time.

Taking photos and recording your child’s key moments and milestones can be a great way of capturing moments that fly by so fast, so you can look back on them and appreciate the time you had.
